The AIGA holds a great event each year for students of the design world. This day long event offers the chance to get advice and helpful information by real design professionals to improve your portfolio. Also a great way to practice interviews and get real honest criticisms. I know sometime my school struggles with that. Space is limited so you need to act fast, and the event will sell out. Long Flow of Hair

I was hesitant to publish the production of Hair by Suffolk University, but ever since I have heard all good things. One of my friends last night actually went to go see the Friday 8pm show, and was impressed. Even the Boston Globe had good things as well. It is already in its third day of four days of performances, but this weekend they are doing two shows a day, at 3pm and 8pm. Tickets are 15 bucks, except if you are a senior, student or have a ID of Suffolk, it will be five bucks. Checkout More!

Too Big of Turnout

I was not ready for this, as the senior show seemed to be a great success when I rolled up half way through the opening. The main gallery was packed, people everywhere, even throughout the hallways. It was ridiculous, but afraid there were too many people it was so hard to see the work. The great thing is, it will still be up until Thursday the 17th. Above is just a small sample of work I loved from last night. Also just want to congratulate all the senior on a very successful show and your work is amazing. Cellphone Sculpture

Twenty-six year old artist, Rob Pettit does the art that I love by taking other peoples trash and turning them into great art, everyone then wants. People goes through cellphones like candy these days, Rob Pettit adopts them, has even developed numerous colds from their history. He does love the history though of each phone, with all the conversations made, and how people care so much for their phones, until their newest one. He never had collections as a child, so he started collecting cellphones, and now makes art out of them. He is not trying to make a point of cellphone waste, he's just trying to make something else out of them. His show started yesterday, until the start of May. How many phones have you had, just think, one of these cellphones he uses could be your old phone.

What is new media and how does a graphic designer, design for it? With the growth of web-based everything, designers are forced to learn the new media way. This is the fifth event of the AIGA Field Report. A panel of three new media wizards will be at the WGBH Auditorium TONIGHT to answer all your hard questions. Plus the moderator of this event is David Small of Small Design Firm Inc., which is located only a few block from myself. Students only pay 7 bucks, so its a steal of a deal. Was looking at this show the other day, and today learned that Space Other Gallery will be closing at the end of the month, after three years in the South End. They have had some great contemporary art work in the past years, which I have really loved and were inspiring. I am really sad to see this gallery closing, but like I said, they are open to the end of the month...

...so the show that translates to 'We go in circles in the dark and are consumed by fire' by a combination of artist, Abel Auer, Nir Hod, Antonio Martorell, Steve Schepens, René Spitzer, Anke Wenzel is up and the gallery is going out with a bang. New England Survey

March 28 - May 11, 2008 - Photographic Resource Center & BU

I know, I know, when you think New England photography you think landscapes with a windmill, beaches, or landmarks of the city we all know already, Boston, but this gallery is different. The Photographic Resource Center & Boston University started a show on March 28th with some great photography, that even interests myself. The work is a big, with pieces at 30X30 to 40X50s. The show has work from all New England states, and if you don't know how many states there are in New England, its six. Barbara Bosworth, Jonathan Sharlin, Tanja Alexia Hollander, Janet L. Pritchard, Thad Russell and Paul Taylor will be those six names showing. And yes, I knew how many states were in New England before reading about this show. I encourage you to go. Checkout More!

BPL Loves Design Too

Erik Spiekermann Lecture

April 9, 2008 - Boston Public Library

My former professor Marie-Anne, told me about the great chance to see German graphic designer Erik Spiekermann at the Boston Public Library. Spiekermann loves typography, and if you love it too, you should go to the FREE lecture. Its in a nice small room with a screen, and once the room is full, the doors will close, so go early. If you enter in the main/side entrance on Boylston Street, it will be downstairs, or just ask for some help. I will not be able to go, as I have class, unless I skip, hmmm. It will be in the RABB Lecture Hall, at 6pm. Checkout the clip from Helvetica about Spiekermann.

I don't know if this is a new gallery but I have never heard of this gallery before last night. Maybe I am just stupid. This exhibit has been up for almost a month now and it comes down on April 19, and I just love the work. Its funky, with great color. The show is of five artist by the names of Brian Chippendale, Christopher Davison, Nicole Deponte, Jungil Hong, and Kevin Hooyman. The gallery is open from Wednesday to Saturday, noon to 5. Its a wide range of work, from screenprinting, to ink and watercolor and even collage on wood. Checkout More!

Art & Design of the 20th and 21st Centuries presents a massive collection of Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, Scandinavian Design, Mid-Century Modern, and Third Quarter side by side with 21st century design, studio furniture, glass and ceramics, as well as a stunning array of paintings, sculpture, prints, and photography. Overwhelming, yes, but it is 108 years of amazing art and design work so you have to check it out. It is 15 dollars. Some might be turned off from that, but its more then just art work, as there is a whole event including speakers. Also helps a good cause. It is only going on for today and tomorrow and thats it. Student Senior Show - Illuminate

The senior undergraduate graphic design show for the New England School of Art and Design students is getting setup this weekend. The show will start this coming Monday the 7th. I encourage you to go as I know just about all the student designers and this time next year I'll be telling you to go the same show as I'll be the one featured, with the rest of my class. The work is the best of the best of the school and the design is great. The opening reception will be on the early evening of Friday the 11th. This has little to do about the Boston area, but it needs to be seen. I love to make art out of trash as it is a free material, now try building as house out of it. This is where Michael Reynolds comes in. He might just be my 'newest' hero. Try living in a house that is wind powered, sun powered, your walls are made of cement and old tires. Yeah, it sounds 'ghetto' but if your utilizes are 50 bucks a year, and it looks a hell of a lot cooler then your house now. You wash your hands, the water you don't use, then waters your plants through piles. Funny thing about this is, the US fought to shut this houses down as they were against code, yet developing nations loved building these 'Earthships'. Then one day a hurricane by the name of Katrina hit, now Michael Reynolds has the government on his side. What I am trying to say is two things, we need these in Boston, and go rent this movie as it came out today, unless you have Sundance. Checkout More!

The HOW Design Conference is coming to Boston. Impressive Boston! This conference is pretty much every aspect of graphic design thrown into a couple of days. From business to the design side. Why I don't want to get you too exited about this, as students have to pay $575. Yeah I coughed too. Atleast checkout all the speakers that will be there, its a impressive list.
