One Day Later

Pixnit - Hello My Name is Pixnit
May 3 - June 1, 2008 - Judi Rotenberg Gallery

One day after getting Pixnit as The Struggling Blogger's artist of the month, she gets slammed with the cover of the Boston's Weekly Dig. Oh Struggle you so good! The great thing is she has a one lady show opening this Saturday on Newbury, so congrats and you know what that means, GO! She also has two pieces you the viewer at the gallery will be able to draw on and she will seal once the exhibit is finished. Why she doing this, taking this from the Weekly Dig "People ask 'How would you feel if we painted on your walls?' ...I'm reacting to what Boston's thinking." I love this girl, and I have no idea who she is or even looks like. Checkout More!

Change of Plans, Fairey in 2009

Shepard Fairey
February 6 - April 19, 2008
False alarm everyone, Shepard Fairey is coming to Boston to hang his career at the ICA, but not as early as I previously posted about a month and a half ago. The ICA has given the new dates of February 6 to April 19, 2009, compared to the dates we and the ICA posted which were July of this summer to late October 2008. This means you and I will have to relax and think about something else for... a year. So disapointing, but hey I am still going to wait, and wait... and wait Checkout More!

Best Street Artist in Boston (2008)

Pixnit
Graffiti, Street, Performance Artist

Pixnit is not new to the area, but she is getting a lot of attention lately. Profiling her as this months featured artist was a must. I heard of Pixnit about a year ago from a friend who knows the artists work very well. Her pieces are not always visible and not easy to find and what makes them great as they sometimes fit their scenery and are very organic which I love. She was recently awarded the 'Best of 2008' by the Phoenix as the cities best street artist. So check her site out and keep your eyes open. Checkout More!

Over the Top

Alex MacLean - Over the Top
April 11 - May 20, 2008 - Miller Block Gallery

This gallery has been going on since April, but it is going on until May 20th. I thought they were amazing aerial photography and how they look gridded and placed, it makes it so pleasing to the eye. The gallery is at 14 Newbury but even if you can't make the trip, at least view some of the sample photos such as the two above to really see how simple but interesting the exhibit is. Minimalist LeWitt in Boston!

Sol LeWitt
April 12 - May 21, 2008 - Barbara Krakow Gallery

The great minimalist Sol LeWitt has a career long collection of work showing in Boston, and has since April 12th! LeWitt, if you do not know his work, he is well known for pieces such as "Variations of Incomplete Open Cubes" from 1974. LeWitt is one of the artists you will hear when studying about the minimalism period in contemporary art. This show displays work from the 70s, 90s, and 2000s such as the piece above. Remember he is a minimalist, so realize it is going to look pretty well, minimal. This is a great show, great artist and a great opportunity to see a classic artists work in Boston. Checkout More!

Get Some Real Feedback

2008 AIGA Annual Student Portfolio Review
April 26, 2008 - Mass College of Art & Design

The AIGA holds a great event each year for students of the design world. This day long event offers the chance to get advice and helpful information by real design professionals to improve your portfolio. Also a great way to practice interviews and get real honest criticisms. I know sometime my school struggles with that. Space is limited so you need to act fast, and the event will sell out. The event lasts from 9:30 to 3:30pm. It is under two weeks away, so think fast, it is a great opportunity. Checkout More!

Long Flow of Hair

Suffolk Presents: Hair
April 10 - 13, 2008 - C Walsh Theatre

I was hesitant to publish the production of Hair by Suffolk University, but ever since I have heard all good things. One of my friends last night actually went to go see the Friday 8pm show, and was impressed. Even the Boston Globe had good things as well. It is already in its third day of four days of performances, but this weekend they are doing two shows a day, at 3pm and 8pm. Tickets are 15 bucks, except if you are a senior, student or have a ID of Suffolk, it will be five bucks. Checkout More!

Too Big of Turnout

Illuminate Senior Show
April Now-17, 2008 - N.E. School of Art & Design

I was not ready for this, as the senior show seemed to be a great success when I rolled up half way through the opening. The main gallery was packed, people everywhere, even throughout the hallways. It was ridiculous, but afraid there were too many people it was so hard to see the work. The great thing is, it will still be up until Thursday the 17th. Above is just a small sample of work I loved from last night. Also just want to congratulate all the senior on a very successful show and your work is amazing. To get to the show, go to New England School of Art & Design, at 75 Arlington Street, on the 2nd floor.

Cellphone Sculpture

Rob Pettit
April 10 - May 3, 2008 - Grossman Gallery @ SMFA

Twenty-six year old artist, Rob Pettit does the art that I love by taking other peoples trash and turning them into great art, everyone then wants. People goes through cellphones like candy these days, Rob Pettit adopts them, has even developed numerous colds from their history. He does love the history though of each phone, with all the conversations made, and how people care so much for their phones, until their newest one. He never had collections as a child, so he started collecting cellphones, and now makes art out of them. He is not trying to make a point of cellphone waste, he's just trying to make something else out of them. His show started yesterday, until the start of May. How many phones have you had, just think, one of these cellphones he uses could be your old phone.

Discovering New Media

Field Report: Navigating the New Media Frontier
April 10, 2008, WGBH Auditorium

What is new media and how does a graphic designer, design for it? With the growth of web-based everything, designers are forced to learn the new media way. This is the fifth event of the AIGA Field Report. A panel of three new media wizards will be at the WGBH Auditorium TONIGHT to answer all your hard questions. Plus the moderator of this event is David Small of Small Design Firm Inc., which is located only a few block from myself. Students only pay 7 bucks, so its a steal of a deal. I want to go but I always have night classes, and the class is a new media class, so I guess I'll just tell you to go. Checkout More!

Game Over, Space Other

In Girum Imus Nocte Et Consumimur Igni
April 4 - 26, 2008 - Space Other Gallery

Was looking at this show the other day, and today learned that Space Other Gallery will be closing at the end of the month, after three years in the South End. They have had some great contemporary art work in the past years, which I have really loved and were inspiring. I am really sad to see this gallery closing, but like I said, they are open to the end of the month...

...so the show that translates to 'We go in circles in the dark and are consumed by fire' by a combination of artist, Abel Auer, Nir Hod, Antonio Martorell, Steve Schepens, René Spitzer, Anke Wenzel is up and the gallery is going out with a bang. So go support this great work, and the ending of a even better gallery. So long Space Other, so long. Checkout More!

New England and Cool, in the same Sentence!

New England Survey
March 28 - May 11, 2008 - Photographic Resource Center & BU

I know, I know, when you think New England photography you think landscapes with a windmill, beaches, or landmarks of the city we all know already, Boston, but this gallery is different. The Photographic Resource Center & Boston University started a show on March 28th with some great photography, that even interests myself. The work is a big, with pieces at 30X30 to 40X50s. The show has work from all New England states, and if you don't know how many states there are in New England, its six. Barbara Bosworth, Jonathan Sharlin, Tanja Alexia Hollander, Janet L. Pritchard, Thad Russell and Paul Taylor will be those six names showing. And yes, I knew how many states were in New England before reading about this show. I encourage you to go. Checkout More!

BPL Loves Design Too

Erik Spiekermann Lecture
April 9, 2008 - Boston Public Library

My former professor Marie-Anne, told me about the great chance to see German graphic designer Erik Spiekermann at the Boston Public Library. Spiekermann loves typography, and if you love it too, you should go to the FREE lecture. Its in a nice small room with a screen, and once the room is full, the doors will close, so go early. If you enter in the main/side entrance on Boylston Street, it will be downstairs, or just ask for some help. I will not be able to go, as I have class, unless I skip, hmmm. It will be in the RABB Lecture Hall, at 6pm. Checkout the clip from Helvetica about Spiekermann.

Earthships Invading

Garbage Warrior - DVD
April 2, 2008

This has little to do about the Boston area, but it needs to be seen. I love to make art out of trash as it is a free material, now try building as house out of it. This is where Michael Reynolds comes in. He might just be my 'newest' hero. Try living in a house that is wind powered, sun powered, your walls are made of cement and old tires. Yeah, it sounds 'ghetto' but if your utilizes are 50 bucks a year, and it looks a hell of a lot cooler then your house now. You wash your hands, the water you don't use, then waters your plants through piles. Funny thing about this is, the US fought to shut this houses down as they were against code, yet developing nations loved building these 'Earthships'. Then one day a hurricane by the name of Katrina hit, now Michael Reynolds has the government on his side. What I am trying to say is two things, we need these in Boston, and go rent this movie as it came out today, unless you have Sundance. Checkout More!

HOW the Hell!

HOW Design Conference
May 18 - 21, 2008 - Hynes Convention Center

The HOW Design Conference is coming to Boston. Impressive Boston!
This conference is pretty much every aspect of graphic design thrown into a couple of days. From business to the design side. Why I don't want to get you too exited about this, as students have to pay $575. Yeah I coughed too. Atleast checkout all the speakers that will be there, its a impressive list. So unless you win the lottery and win soon, good luck getting in otherwise. Well it was a nice thought. Checkout More!
